Vishu
The New Year festival of Kerala is known as Vishu. It is generally celebrated in the second week of April. The main elements that comes in association with the celebration of vishu are “vishukkani”, “vishukkaineetam”, “buying new dress”, “vishu sadya”etc . This festival has more to do with the celebrations and rituals connected to agriculture. Cultivation of new crops commences on this day and the activities would last up to the Pathamudayam day or the tenth day from the Vishu day.
The famous temples like Guruvayur, Sabarimala and Padmanaba Kshetram are filled with devotees. Special pujas are held in these temples where the people go to worship and pray for a prosperous New Year. They also view the Vishukanis that are prepared in each of these temples.
